The entertainment industry, particularly television, remains a landscape of limited opportunities for black Americans and other people of color, according to a report released December 18 by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
The NAACP study, the latest of a series it’s done on Hollywood, asserted that people of color face “employment and promotion opportunities [which are] directly tied to highly subjective practices, a closed roster system and potentially discriminatory guild membership practices.” It also said that the “serious shortage” of people of color on television “can also be traced to the virtual disappearance of black programming since the merger of UPN and WB networks into the CW network.”
The 52-page report urges establishing a task force of network executives, educators and others along with NAACP officials whose purpose would be to draft a “best practices” memorandum for use throughout the industry.
