Farewell to Boubacar Joseph Ndiaye, Keeper of Slave Trade Memories

By The Editors

Boubacar Joseph Ndiaye of Dakar, Senegal, devoted more than half his life to ensuring that the history of the African slave trade was not distorted or erased. As curator of the memorial on Goreé Island, where captured Africans were held before being subjected to  the horrific Middle Passage to the Americas, Ndiaye tirelessly shared the story of the mistreatment and suffering behind the famed Door of No Return.

While some of his most famous visitors included Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, Pope John Paul II and several celebrities, Ndiaye was committed to touching the souls and moving the hearts of millions of people, especially those of African descent who had returned to the Motherland seeking connections to their ancestors and history.

His passion and his legacy will live on to inspire others to keep this essential link to  history alive.
