A couple of recent news stories offer a glimpse into the growing U.S. prison industrial system. Amy Goodman of Democracy Now TV/radio news writes of two Pennsylvania judges who pleaded guilty to taking kickbacks from the builders and owners of private prison facilities who profited from the imprisonment of some 2,000 children
Meanwhile, the growing enforcement of immigration laws has led to a growth in the Latino prison population. Solomon Moore writes in the New York Times that Latinos, who make up 13 percent adults in the U.S., account for 40 percent of those convicted of federal crimes. Only a quarter of those are estimated to be U.S. citizens.
