Civil Rights Groups Encourage Blacks and Latinos to Speak up on Health Care Reform
Today, a coalition of civil rights organizations announced a joint initiative to encourage millions of Black and Latino Americans to make a final push for universal health care coverage. The coalition includes the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Council of La Raza, the Center for Community Change, the United States Student Association, PowerPAC.org, and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR).
Senate Set to Vote on Obama DoJ Civil Rights Nominee
The Senate is scheduled to vote Tuesday afternoon on President Obama’s nominee to lead the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.
Federal hate crime probe eyes Suffolk Police
The U.S. Department of Justice has stepped up its inquiry into the Suffolk County Police Department, announcing Monday it has launched an official investigation into allegations of discriminatory policing.
Democrats Return Fire On Black Panthers Case
Democratic members of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights are accusing the agency’s conservative majority of acting in an “improperly partisan” manner in challenging the Obama Justice Department’s handling of the New Black Panther Party case.
The Washington Post recently published another completely deceitful story about the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and its supposed non-enforcement of federal laws during the Bush administration (“Justice Department to Address Backlog of Civil Rights Complaints,” September 25). I sent a letter to the editors disputing the story — perhaps the Post will surprise me and eventually publish it. I thought Corner readers might be interested in reading what the Post so far has not seen fit to print:
The Supreme Court began its new term Monday by indicating a willingness to limit how long a suspect’s request for a lawyer should remain valid, and new Justice Sonia Sotomayor wasted little time in letting her voice be heard by questioning the lawyers.
