A lot of great movies on the list. But let's not forget the so called "Blaxploitation" period of the early 70's.. Pam Grier, Fred Williamson. Jim Brown & Jim Kelly.
This film genre received both acclaim and condemnation. The cinematography by Gordon Parks in Superfly was extraordinary for the time.
Are there any opinions or views on how this movie genre impacted African American culture?

No Roots (made for TV, but whatever), The Great Debaters or Malcolm X?

Good list but could have been much better.

Wow - some in there that I would not have thought of. Purple Rain, totally forgot about that one. At the American Black Film Festival 2009, John Singleton gave a talk on directing and cited the beginning sequence of that film as one of his favorites of all time. I agree with him! Great list. Thanks!

I'm so relieved that none of the money making enigma Tyler Perry's films are present. I feel his movies get too much credit. Now that he has made his money, I feel its time he helps better film makers hit the lime light. I highly doubt that though.

I'd absolutely include Wesley Snipe's Blade (and Blade 2 for that matter). You've got to appreciate the triple-meaning of a vampire telling a black vampire-killer to "spare me the Uncle Tom routine," and the old race-bait pseudo-question 'can you blush?' is taken to new heights when asked between vampire and 'human'. Also I'm seriously partial to Devil In a Blue Dress, since it stars the most memorable black detective on-screen not played by Richard Roundtree or Morgan Freeman. (And if you didn't like Don Cheadle's mouse, where's your pulse?)

Hey Rhonda, thanks for the kudos. I have to check out the 1952 version of "Cry, The Beloved Country" ~ The '95 version w/ James Earl Jones isn't to shabby either. And don't worry, there will be another ground breaking moment in film for African Americans...stay tuned!:)
@Wade ~ Ousmane Sembene is an incredible filmmaker

What about African films? Sure, they're not African-American, but every African-American viewer should see a film like Emitai by Ousmane Sembène. White Americans, too.

Wonderful list! There are many more films that could have made the cut. Also, thanks for enlightening me on some films I've never heard of. My primary concern is if there will be another great, historical, ground-breaking masterpiece film about African Americans anytime in the near future. I'm waiting. I do love Tyler Perry, but there are so many stories and issues in our history and culture that have yet to be told. If I were to add one more film to the list it would be "Cry, the Beloved Country" (1952).

What about Brother from Another Planet. A great Film. I would also like to ad Brown Sugar and Stomp the Yard. I think it was a much underappreciated film but had some really great acting. It is one of the few black dominated cast films were people actually fall in love instead of into sex or just deal with relationship problems. The ending is rather predictable but a standout over many of the others on that list. Carmen, however, has to be my favorite on the list. Just a wonderful piece.

Great List!! I added a few to my netflix queue. I would have to add Blazing Saddles, Sparkle, X and New Jack City in place of In the Heat of the Night, Carmen Jones, Stormy Weather and Hollywood Shuffle.
