Please seek out and encourage Sydney Poitier to consider a great - grand dad roll on one of the new sit - coms on TV today. He would be such a great image (I am hoping)for our younsters. My request is both personal and selfish. Mr. Portier looks very much like my dad who died nearly 20 years ago and I am 1 of 5 girls with no brothers. I am 65 years old and would like to look at him (and I know my sisters would, as well)and remember the 'good - old days before I get to see my dad in heaven. Also, Betty White and Ed Asner are really showing the world that lfe reblooms after 70. Evelyn, Pat, Connie, Althea and in Memory of Tess

Is there any black person besides me who has noticed the "typical" black issues that the black couples have on "The Game"? But the bi-racial's couple issues on there are totally different. Why lower Black standards to please our interest? Honestly, The Game used to have some pretty interesting themes, however, it did not gain the black community’s interest at the time, even though it was on public television. I miss Bill Cosby, Family matters, Bernie Mac, Everybody Hates Chris...you know, unperfect but functional families. Surprisingly this is comming from a 22 year old married black woman.

My interest is in the future African-American television shows - The ones that are viewed on major networks that don’t require subscriptions to cable networks soliciting money.
To begin: Are there any new shows, currently running on the t.v. schedule for 2010? Has not there been a strong enough foundation laid for new shows, or any show that can fill the void left from...Oh, the Cosby Show or A Different World -- Or any mentioned above from the top 10 list?
Tyler Perry has created a strong following in motion pictures that depict intellectual currents once established by my aforementioned shows. With that being said, are we dropping the ball? I tend to be watching more shows that depict the unrealistic upper echelons of Caucasians. Those that seem to hold fantastic jobs and have great lives: Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory; Or, some gun wielding blond supermodel.
Please let me now if there are any prospects.
Brew wimber.
P.S. Any one remember Robert Townsend?

One of the best and funniest Black comedy shows ever, a fact acknowledged by Bill Cosby himself, was Amos and Andy. The controversial show aired from 1951 to 1953 during a time when African-Americans were engaged in a battle for basic Civil Rights. As the only show on television representing African-Americans it was certainly not the appropriate show to represent the Black Community. In truth the situations from which the comedy arose were no worse than many on "The Jackie Gleason Show"or "I Love Lucy" but more positive role models were desired, not uneducated, dumb, morally corrupt comedy figures. However, from the standpoint of comedy it was, and still remains, one of the funniest shows of all times.

Hey Steve,
I was a big fan of Deep Space Nine. It just didn't meet the criteria strongly enough. But I think you might agree that we will both be ecstatic when we can finally find a sci fi show with tons of people of color in "Deep Space". A "Matrix" for TV.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the highest rated drama of all time with an African-American lead. Avery Brooks starring in Star Trek Deep Space Nine gave us great drama and a positive spin of the black family in the future. It's ashamed this show gets so little embrace from our community.

I agree, that's why I am doing a special piece on Soul Train that will detail it's extraordinary cultural influence. Coming soon. Watch out for it.
