Antonio Beaver was officially exonerated three years ago this week after spending more than ten years in Missouri prisons for a carjacking he did not commit. The victim had described the carjacker as clean-shaven, with a “David Letterman-like” gap between his teeth. Beaver had a full moustache and a chipped tooth, yet the victim identified Beaver at a lineup because he was the only man with a noticeable tooth defect. After filing a motion for DNA testing in 2001, it took six more years, and a brief filed by the Innocence Project, before Beaver was excluded as the source of blood found in the victim’s car.
