Common Myths About the Census

  • Myth: Census information is shared with government officials, who can then use it against you.
Fact: All individual information is confidential and will not be shared with any person or governmental agency.
  • Myth: Census workers who come to your door are government law enforcement agents looking for illegal immigrants and people they suspect of criminal activity.
Fact: Census workers are not law enforcement, immigration, or customs enforcement officials. Their only purpose is to aid you in filling out and returning your Census information. They only come to your door if you have NOT mailed the form back by April 1.
  • Myth: Only U.S. citizens are supposed to participate in the Census.
Fact: The Census aims to count everyone in the United States: Citizens and non-citizens, adults and children.
  • Myth: It’s okay to ignore the Census. Filling it out won’t help anyone anyway.
Fact: Census data determined the amount of federal and state funding your neighborhood receives to address important social issues. Census data helps determine the location of schools, hospitals and other services.
