Census = Political Power + Civil Rights
Your political representation and civil rights are tied to your Census participation. Census data are used:
- To draw electoral districts
- To determine whether the population is equally distributed in an electoral district
- To determine whether electoral districts give minorities an equal opportunity to elect their candidates of choice.
- To enforce the Civil Rights Act of 1694 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
The seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are divided among the states based on the population size of each state, as measured by Census data. Within states, U.S. Congressional, state, and local electoral district lines are also drawn using Census data.
