The April Jobs Report: The Good News Is Not Good Enough

The federal government’s jobs report for April is due out Thursday, and all expectations are that it will continue the recent skein of data indicating the economy has stopped the frightful two-year-long hemorrhaging of jobs and begun a modest climb toward recovery.

The anti-abortion movement, which made recent headlines for controversial billboards targeting African-American women in Georgia, suffered a setback on April 30 when Bill 1155, referred to as “The OB/GYN Criminalization and Racial Discrimination Act” failed to move forward in the Georgia House of Representatives after having been passed by the Senate.

Hooks and Dorothy Irene Height, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s organization, was trying to resolve a nasty split in its leadership ranks that involves allegations of ethical and criminal misconduct.



The New (Old) Language of Anti-Mexican Racism

Mexican immigrants and other Latinos are today being described in terms such as “dangerous” and “criminal.” They are called “lazy” and reported to be “lurking on street corners.”

The new language of anti-Mexican racism is actually drawn on centuries-old images from the white racial framing of African Americans, now repurposed for other people with brown skin.

Danny Brown spent more than 18 years in an Ohio prison for the 1981 murder of his girlfriend before DNA testing proved him innocent and led to his release. His conviction was based on the testimony of the victim’s six-year-old son, who was in the home at the time of the murder.
