Thomas Doswell

After a woman was attacked near a Pittsburgh hospital in 1986, police showed the victim a photographic lineup. None of the photographs were marked except for Doswell’s. His photograph had the letter “R” written on it. At trial, a police officer explained that photographs marked with an “R” represented photographs of people who had been charged with rape. The victim identified Doswell in this lineup as her attacker, and was convicted based mainly on the identification.

Doswell served nearly 19 years before DNA testing obtained by the Innocence Project proved that another man has committed the crime. Prosecutor joined in a motion for his release, and Doswell was freed on August 1, 2005. Today, Doswell speaks out about the causes of wrongful convictions and performs music.
