The equality-loving – so they say – College Republican club at the University of California at Berkeley yesterday held what they described as a satirical “bake sale” on the storied campus to publicize their opposition to any change in 15-year-old ban against state institutions adopting affirmative action policies.

Affirmative action is usually considered a creation of the 1960s, when the civil rights movement culminated in the enactment of a series of federal laws. But the term “affirmative action” was in common usage for at least two decades before then in the civil rights community, laying the groundwork for the systematic efforts to assure a larger place for racial-ethnic minorities and women in employment, higher education and public contracting.

The word “diversity” has popular appeal, maybe more so these days than “affirmative action.” But who knew diversity and affirmative action are in conflict at many businesses and colleges?
