Federal prosecutors are expected to call their final witness Monday in the explosive trial in New Orleans whose purpose is to apply a measure of justice to one of the most notorious incidents that wracked the city in the wake of Hurricane Katrina: the Danizger Bridge police shooting.

Today, African-American homeowners and two civil rights organizations announced a settlement in a post-Hurricane Katrina housing discrimination lawsuit brought against the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the State of Louisiana regarding the “Road Home” program.

In the chaotic days after Hurricane Katrina flooded much of New Orleans, a group of New Orleans police officers decided to “shoot first and ask questions later” in responding to another officer’s call for help on that city’s Danziger Bridge, a federal prosecutor said Tuesday, as the federal trial of five of those officers moved into its second full day.

On April 8, 2011, a federal court of appeals issued a ruling explaining its decision to set aside preliminary injunctions previously granted against the State of Louisiana regarding its administration of the Road Home program.

Five current and former New Orleans police officers, charged with perpetrating one of the most notorious incidents of police misconduct in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina five years ago, went on trial this week in federal district court in New Orleans.

On Wednesday the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia issued an injunction protecting funds from the Road Home Program so that displaced homeowners can have an opportunity to show that Louisiana and HUD have distributed recovery funds in a discriminatory manner.
